Wilek, Trevn, and their exploring party enjoyed their time in Ilyon, but they donโ€™t feel like there is enough room in the area for the hundreds of ships and the thousands of people among their fleet. They trek north along the costal cliffs until they come to Stop #3, Seultrie, from Ronie Kendigโ€™sย Abiassaโ€™s Fireย trilogy.ย
Ronie Kendig is an award-winning, bestselling author of a dozen novels. She grew up an Army brat. Now, she and her husband, an Army veteran, have an adventurous life in Northern Virginia with their children and a retired military working dog, VVolt N629. Ronieโ€™s degree in Psychology has helped her pen novels of intense, raw characters. Since launching onto the publishing scene in 2010, Ronie and Rapid-Fire Fiction novels have hit bestseller lists and garnered awards and critical acclaim. Hereโ€™s a closer look atย Accelerant, book twoย in theย Abiassaโ€™s Fireย trilogy.ย
ย

Heโ€™ll destroy the world. But first he has to save it.

The Nine Kingdoms bleed. Leaderless, ravaged, the land awaits deliverance from Poired Dyrthโ€™s devastating campaign. But what if one blight can only be cleansed by another?

The promised Fierian is known by many names. Judge. Destroyer. Scourge. And now one other: Haegan, Prince of Seultrie. Once a cripple, now a gifted Accelerant, Haegan can no longer run from the truth. But neither can he be reconciled to it. He knows only one thing for certain: as the only able-bodied heir to the Fire Throne, he must return to the Nine and fight for his people.

But there are insidious forces at work. When reality itself falls into question, Haegan struggles to know where to fight, whom to trust. Caught between duty to his country and duty to the world, Haegan must see clearly enough to choose the right path to save the world.

Lakes of Fire to the Cold One’s Tooth

I have a confession to make: I fail at storyworlding.ย
Well, not really. What I fail atย is the detailed planning, arranging, and plotting of a planet or universe as many fantasy/science fictions do. That’s primarily because my first focus when I enter a story is its characters. I spend a lot of time researching what archetype they are, explore their personality type, their backstory, goals, motivations, lies they believe, etc.
Then I pitch them into the dark world and make them fight their way out.
Okay, so maybe not that dramatic, but yeah. It was quite a surprise to me when I got the edits on Embers, Abiassa’s Fire #1, and my editor SHREDDED (in love, of course) me over the storyworld and the rules within that world. While I’ve written a dozen speculative novels and started but never finished at least that many, I had never been challenged so thoroughly to define my world, its rules, and its characters.
It proved exhilarating, honestly–after I stopped weeping for the massacre she’d carried out on my story (seriously–it was hemorrhaging, but don’t worry: I ADORE my editor!!). In the center of the planet, we have Zaethien, and within it, Seultrie, the seat of the Nine Kingdoms and from where the Fire King rules. Close to their home, Fieri Keep, are the raging Lakes of Fire–teeming molten pouring down from Fieri Mount. To live so close to the Lakes, the castle is built with ironstone, which cools theย stone and shields against extreme heat. The Fire King lives here, it is said, to be close to the Flames, the ability granted them by Abiassa to harness heat and fire, to “wield.” These accelerants were set in place to protect the planet, but many have lost their way, turning the flames dark and earning the name incipients.
But to live there, as Thurig as’Tili would tell, you must be a Thin Blood. From his home at Nivar Hold, at the foot of the mountain range of Legier and the Cold One’s Tooth, he trains the king’s elite guards and does his best to ignore the roiling turmoil of the Nines. Deeperย within those mountains a thriving community exists, living in incredible, intricate cave system nicknamed Legier’s Heart.
In the middle, on plains scorched by the darkest of incipients, Poired Dyrth, the Nine and the Northlands will converge to fight for their lives and their planet,ย a battle that ushers in the prophetic arrival of the Fierian.

I’ve seen these books around and never read what they were about, so I now feel enlightened! ๐Ÿ˜€ Love the detail about ironstone… so cool. But yikes, this world sounds a bit like Mordor! XD Fighting their way out indeed. ๐Ÿ˜‰ I think it’s so cool you know your characters so well! ๐Ÿ™‚

Looks intriguing! And that’s so cool that you have a psychology degree! I’m currently taking a psychology class, and I hope it helps with developing my characters. (Which are my VERY favorite part about writing. :D)

I accidentally put my email in the “Join Ronie’s Newsletter!” box, and now I can’t find a place to actually subscribe to your newsletter…oops. ๐Ÿ˜› I guess that’s what happens when I get caught up in listening to Narnia soundtracks. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Where exactly can I find a place to sign up for your newsletter?
