NEW FROM OLD:

Turning a Standard Storyline On Its Head

Β by Anne Elisabeth Stengl

“I would write a book, but every time I think I’ve got a good idea, I find out that someone else has already done it!”

I cannot tell you how many times I have heard this same sad plaint from wannabe novelists. But I’m not as sympathetic as I might be. Because you know what? Ultimately, it’s just another excuse.

There are no new ideas left in the writing world. Seriously, people! It’s all been done before. I recently taught a creative writing class at a local university in which I shocked my audience by explaining that everybody’s favorite Star Wars: A New Hope movie is just a retelling of Cinderella, packaged up with some new frills. It was actually kind of funny to watch the looks on the boys’ faces as I pieced together the connections for them: Cinderella = Luke Skywalker, Stepmother = Uncle Owen, Royal Ball = Flight School, Obiwan Kenobi = Fairy Godmother, Light-saber = glass slipper . . . and so on and so forth.

It’s a been-done story. We’ve seen it before. And then we’ve seen it again.

But that’s also why we love it so much!

Stenglbanner

When I sat down to write my newest novel, Dragonwitch, I found myself crippled for the first several months of drafting as I struggled to make it completely original. But when that didn’t work, I decided to take a step back and compile a handful of “been-done” storylines. In this case, storylines that I honestly thought were tired, used, and no longer interesting. These included:

  1. The Chosen One
  2. The arranged marriage
  3. The magic sword (and I even went ahead and stuck mine in a stone, Γ  la King Arthur)
  4. The mysterious old man with secret knowledge
  5. And the . . .

Well, actually, I don’t want to tell you about that last one! While it’s a very used theme that we’ve seen a dozen times before in fantasy fiction, it’s also still a surprise, and I’d hate to spoil it! (You’ll know it as soon as you read it though. Trust me.)

So I looked at my list of been-done tropes. And I thought to myself, “How could I do these differently?”

I didn’t try to come up with “original” storylines. What I did was bring my own perspective on old storylines. And suddenly I found my creativity opening up. After all, we love those old storylines because they truly are fun! They speak to us, to our individual understanding of universal themes. And there is always a new spin to be spun, a new angle to be tried.

Ultimately, there aren’t any new stories. But there are always new storytellers. Every writer has personal experiences, tastes, ideas which she/he brings into play. And those new ideas are what give new life to even the most tired storylines.

The more of yourself you pour into your work, the more life it will take on. And that’s when something exciting and–if I dare say it–something “original” begins to happen.

Anne Elisabeth Stengl’s upcoming release, Dragonwitch (Tales of Goldstone Wood)is a riveting fantasy filled with a prince, castles, powerful swords, and even more powerful heroes! It is available at bookstores or online at Amazon, Barnes & Noble , Christian Book Distributors and elsewhere.

  2. Faith

My family has a Marine in it… a Marine Sgt. We got to write him letters for two tours. We were more blessed by the experience than he was, and he thanked us! We needed to thank him! He remains “our Marine.” πŸ™‚

  3. Jeff

My grandfathers on both sides who both served in WWII and my father who served in Vietnam. These books look interesting! Will have to give them a look!

I didn’t answer the Raffle copter’s question: favorite patriot? Can I say ALL military personnel, 2 legged and 4 legged?!!!

  7. Teish

I treasure the photos and letters that my grandfather and his two brothers sent home while they were overseas during WW2. My boys never met any of them, but I’m glad to have a piece of their history to share with my kids!

My kid brother is my favorite patriot πŸ™‚ He is now a veteran, has a full-time federal job, and is pursuing a degree in criminal justice. He served for 6 months in Iraq (4 years in the army) and I will forever be thanking God for his safe return πŸ™‚ Thanks soooo much for this awesome bonus giveaway, Ronie, hugs and blessings to you!!

my favorite patriot is probably abraham lincoln. doing the right thing, at immeasurable cost to himself, his family and his country… so that all people could live freely… he’s always been one of my heroes.

  11. Elaine O

I’ve seen these at the library on the new (7-day) shelf… but life has been too busy to get a full series to read in 7 days. But… if I had the books in my own library….

  12. Nicole Stine

Whoops! Just read that I was supposed to answer a specific question!!!

Wasn’t he brilliant? I live within a half hour of Patrick Henry college and I’ve been learning more and more about him now that I’m here. Amazing man!

  14. Erika

My great-grandfather was a veteran. He passed away five years ago, and I miss him a lot. As a kid, I would go into his backyard where he had a HUGE garden. Some of my favorite memories with him were picking strawberries in the garden, and then bringing them in to eat with sugar!

    1. Ashley Kauffman

And my favorite patriot would be a good friend from high school who served as a reserve in the Army and did a tour in Iraq.

  15. Paula

OOPS! Didn’t read the part about putting down my favorite patriot- would have to be my dad! Trinity is a close second, even though fictional.

  16. Terri Schmidt

It’s difficult for me to pick only one patriot who stands above others in my eyes, but I believe George Washington is high on my list. The way he stayed out with the troops in the cold, the snow, the long dreary days of battle fighting for the freedom of our country from England…I wonder if we still have leaders who would be willing to stand with their military and fight in the trenches, rather than staying behind where it’s safe.

  17. Emma Engel

My favorite patriot? Probably those in my family: my grandfathers and my parents. Wonderful books and great post! Thanks for the giveaway.

  18. Sally

Looking forward to reading more of your books, Ronnie! I watched the Inside Combat Rescue series a month or so ago and thought of you. They’d make a good series. πŸ™‚

  19. Cheri Schueller

I have many favorite patriots! I am the daughter, wife, sister, niece, and granddaughter of Army veterans. My oldest son just enlisted in the Navy. I can’t think of a more honorable profession!

  20. Andrea Cox

Hi Ronie! I was so thrilled to see you were a part of this scavenger hunt. I especially enjoyed your post on Robin’s site about the military dogs. Such interesting information I never would have discovered otherwise!

I’d have to say my favorite patriot…well I can’t pick just one! I have several friends and family who have all served (or are currently serving) to keep us free. I thank them every day.

  24. Amy D

My favorite patriot would be my dad. He’s a Vietnam veteran. After him would probably be George Washington.

  25. Kandra

Oooh, sign me up. I’ve read all but one of this series, but none of them are on my bookshelf. Thanks for the giveaway!

  26. J. Elizabeth

My favorite patriot is a friend of mine who has been deployed three times and will be deploying again later this year. He has been through hell but he keeps fighting.

  27. Wilani Wahl

I have just learned about you and your books sound like something I would love to read. Please enter me in your contest

  28. Shantelle

RONIE I can wait to get started on your books. I have heard wonderful things about them by my friend and fellow blogger Marian Baay. Thanks for introducing me to a new author – I love the comment that there are no new stories, but there are lots of new storytellers! And thank you storytellers for keeping me reading!

  36. Cindy Woolard

My favorite patriot has been General Robinson Risner. During the Viet Nam war he was a POW (at that time a Lt. Colonol) and he was instrumental in creating a way to communicate with other POW by sound (like a Morse Code). He led many to Christ. I wore his POW bracelet all through the war. When I found out he made it home I cried like a baby. I was then able to contact him and we shared some special notes back and forth.

    Blessings,
    Cindy W.

  37. Amanda

My favorite Patriot is my Grandfather! He is a veteran raised by a veteran and cares for his disable son after a wreck. Even while dealing with ptsd from his war days he still volunteers his time, energy and money into veterans coming home from war and done wrong by fighting for them and giving them a welcoming home.

  38. Loraine Nunley

My favorite patriot is my own military hero, my husband Thom who is retired from his service in both the Navy and Air Force. He is the love of my life and is truly a man after God’s own heart.

  39. Judy Vandiver

My favorite patriot would be Stephen Autry Heard, a personal friend of George Washington’s and my great great great great grandfather. He was taken prisoner at the Battle of Kettle Creek, but later became governor of Georgia
    .

  40. Jennifer Tipton

My favorite fairy tail will always be Cinderella and my favorite version is Ever After with Drew Barrymore!
    jennydtipton[at]gmail[dot]com

  41. Jan Hall

My favorite patriot is my dad. He was in the Navy. He had 5 kids. At one time all 5 kids were in the military and all but two of the spouses were in the military. Two of his grandsons joined the military. A bit too early for the great grandkids.

  42. Jessica Lorenzini

I would have to say that my favorite patriot would have to be my Grandfather, although most of my family is/was military they all rank high to me. Although, I already own these books I would give them to my best friend who is doing ROTC and loves your books.

  43. Barbara Collver

Your books have been on the top of my list for a long time. Of course, with a very LONG list it is hard to read enough – but this will help me get yours soon!

  44. Barbara Collver

Oh, yes, my favorite patriot is my wonderful hubby, Howie, who was a chaplain’s assistant during the Korea conflict.

  45. Jennifer

Thanks for participating! I love getting to meet so many authors! Can’t wait to read your books! They look so good! I think I will start with DISCARDED HEROES! Thanks again!

  46. Jenny

Hey Ronie! It’s always a pleasure to read about what you are up to. I hope that all goes well with securing the cover models for the next few books!

    1. Jenny

After reading a series by Gilbert Morris, I had a lot of respect for the Southern generals during the Civil War. I also am very proud of some of my old schoolmates who were on active duty.

  47. Donna Tyler

I would love to win your series. I love Christian fiction and donate books I purchase to my local, small town library after I read them.

  48. Kate

My favorite patriot… there are so many famous ones but I would have to choose one that is local to where I live. Adam Brown was a Navy Seal, his story is absolutely incredible!! I am grateful for them all!!

  49. Abbi Hart

I’d say I have two favorite patriots! My all time favorite historical character is George Washington so he would be my first pick and my second is my Pap who fought in WWII. He was a great man who I admire a lot. He passed away a couple years ago but I’ll never forget him! My other Pap was also in WWII but he passed away before I was born so I’ll have to wait until heaven to know him!

  50. Lynn :O)

My hubby is a Navy veteran and my son is in the Army. They are both favourite :O) My grandad was in WW1 with the British Army. (I haven’t really considered that before. I need to go ponder this a while)

  51. Cherie Kasper

It is hard for me to choose between my Dad and my son for this question. My Dad was in WWII on Saipan. Well, he was there after the fighting, they had to go on shore and see all the dead men that hadn’t been picked up yet. He was a baker on his ship. My Son is in the Air National Guard, for 15 yrs. so far, and has gotten to see the world. He got to walk the streets that Jesus walked on. He got to fly in a Blackhawk, he had to eat fish and cheese out of a tube, everything was in a little tube, he’s seen and done so much.

  52. Melissa Battles

My husband is a Marine and my favorite! He has been a Marine for almost 16 years and I am very proud of him.

  53. Kym Pitman

I love your books and I know everyone else will too. I have found some great authors that I am going to try.

  54. Amy L. Norman

My grandfathers on both sides of the family served in WWII. Only one still lives. My father-in-law served in the Korean Conflict as a Crypto officer. I feel that anyone who wears the uniform of ANY branch of the military, and puts their life on the line to defend MY FREEDOM is a TRUE HERO. I make no apologies for feeling that way. God bless America.

  55. Lisa Canfield

    STONEWALL JACKSON HANDS DOWN.

Southern Belle born in the land o’ fruits and nuts(CA), finally moved to the South when she was sixteen, YEAH, that’s me! XD

I would really like to win your book set; historical fiction draws me like bees to a flower field.

  56. Rebecca Booth

My favorites are my two brothers who were in World War II. one was in the Marines and the other in the Navy!

  57. Charlie

I have 2 favorite heros! First was my grandfather, James…he served in WWII as a cook and my Father in Law servied in Vietnam!

  58. Robyn Smith

My favorite patriot is my father -who served in the US Navy during the Korean War and never failed to remember the friends he made during that time and to share stories with me about his time in the Navy. He instilled a deep love of country and respect for our military in my heart.

  59. Rachel Schofield

I love this series. I was absolutely riveted from the first chapter of the first one I read. I love your books!

  60. Rachel Schofield

OK, so I didn’t read about the favorite patriot until I clicked that I had commented… favorite patriot would be my husband’s great grandfather who was in the Army in WWII for New Zealand

  61. Sarah

Star Wars and Cinderella? No way! I never would’ve guessed that! Many thanks, Mrs. Stengl, for the inspiring post, Ms. Kendig for hosting her, and both of you for being part of this scavenger hunt.

My favorite patriot would have to be my dad, who is in the Air Force.

  62. Tammy Kindig

Net to my son-in-law Joshua West, currently serving in the Army…I would have to say William Wallace

  63. Sara tobias

Since I am a Marine wife (Ret) and have 2 Navy sons, one named for his godfather who was a medic in Viet Nam and killed when he was 6 wks old and was also awarded a Silver Star. Guess that’s a start without going into all of the cousins and uncles and my father who served.

  64. Teresa Gonzalez

My Grandfather, Clarence Smith, is my favorite patriot. He was an Air Force airplane mechanic in WWII and
an instructor after the war. And he was a good man.

  65. Erin Wormuth

Thank you for the contest! I would love to try some of your books, so I’m hoping I win the contest! =)

  66. KayM

My favorite patriot would have to be my dad. He joined the Army Air Corps at a young age and was a bombardier in WWII. I have a newspaper write-up, where he was called a hero and it tells about the efforts he made. He never talked about the war to me. He would not have thought it was a suitable topic of conversation for him to have with me. Ever the military man, he was a Lt. Col, when he died in 1984, and was awarded the rank of Colonel after his death.

  67. Barbara Thompson

I cannot access Rafflecopter when it’s posted on a page, but I did like your Facebook page. Would love to win your contest!! I had many uncles that went to war. One uncle was killed in Korean War at the age of seventeen. One cousin killed in Vietnam War . I have a close friend that her son was killed from the Iraq War and then nine months later, she lost her husband to cancer. I don’t believe the military gets the honor that’s due. Thank you for writing about them and thank you for the opportunity to participate in the contest.

  70. Julie Smith

I would have to say that my sister is my favorite patriot. She’s a very brave and strong woman! I’m thankful for her service to our great country!

  71. Georgina

Thanks so much for hosting this giveaway! Your books sound very interesting. My favorite patriot would have to be my Uncle Nathan who served in the Navy for fifteen years.

  72. Judi Hunt

My favorite patriots would have to be the wives who are sending their men into harms way and staying home and keeping the house and taking care of the kids and praying for their man’s safe return.

  73. Rina

I love Anne Elisabeth’s books! And can’t wait to read Dragonwitch!

As to my favorite patriot…someone from the Revolutionary War, but there are so many to choose from! The wives often get overlooked though, I think Martha Washington and Abigail Adams were two amazing women.

  74. Litany L

I would love to win your series, but even if I do not I will purchase your books because I am an AVID christian fiction reader since I was in 3rd grade all I read was christian books. God Bless

  75. sharon miller

Matthew Kartt is married to our niece. He is in the AirForce and a pilot trainer for specialty aircraft. So proud of him. Thanks for the contest! Sharon, CA

  76. Skylar Holcomb

My Favorite veteran would have to be my dad. He was a member of the National Guard for many years. My great-grandfather was in WWI.

  77. Bethany N. Wallace

I know that I probably won’t win- and that’s okay (even though I really would love to win), but I wanted to thank you for doing the treasure hunt and giveaway. I’ve read #1 and loved it! I would like to get ahold of books 2-4! Can’t wait to read them! Thanks again!

  78. Kari

I absolutely LOVED this series! The first book about Max was my favorite because he looks and has the personality of my dear husband!

  79. Lois

Favorite Veteran? My dad – U.S. Air Force. Favorite Patriot? So many choices, but a short list would have to include Betsy Ross – for the U.S. Flag; Dolly Madison – for the heroic rescue of the painting of George Washington and Barbara Bush – for being such a loving, elegant First Lady who did not try tp do her husbands job nor did she push herself forward into the “limelight”.

  80. Betti

My favorite patriot – Abraham Lincoln. I would love to win this set of books, as I have not read them yet.

  81. Jennifer F.

I liked learning about Sybil Lundington (sp?) as a girl … even teenage girls made a difference in the Revolutionary War!

  82. Debora Wilder

It would be impossible to pick just one patriot and call that person my favorite. There are so many. I appreciate all those who serve or have served in the military. We have family members that served in Army, Navy, and Air Force. In fact my husband and I met while we were both serving in the Air Force.

  83. BookLover62

My favorite veteran would have to be my Dad. He joined the Army, then was in the Army Air Corps and finally retired out of the U.S. Air Force in 1964 after being on active duty for 22 years. He was flying B-52’s when he retired. He’s going strong, healthy and happy at 90 and just celebrated 64 years of wedded bliss to my mom (89). She is also my favorite veteran as she served also as a family member, moving all around the country, and even overseas while raising 2 kids.

  84. Tammy Sotela

My favorite veteran was my father. He served this great country for twenty years in the US Air Force.

  85. Liz Riggs

I have several friends who I graduated with or went tor church with that have joined the military. I’m so proud of them and couldn’t pick one favorite!

  86. Lynda E.

Wow! What a great post with some unique insight. And what a wonderful bonus giveaway–I haven’t read this series yet, so I would love to win. My favorite patriot is my brother, a United States Marine. I was tempted to submit him for your cover contest, but he’s unavailable right now. Thanks for participating in the scavenger hunt!

  87. wanda barefoot

Loving the hunt and would love a set of your books to fill my days. Thank you for participating and for the extra giveaway! πŸ™‚

  88. Charlotte

My favorite patriot is my grandson who is currently serving in the Army as a Blackhawk crew chief in a Medic Unit. He has served both in Iraq and Afghanistan and is presently state-side. Thank you for being part of the Scavenger Hunt. It is fun and informative and gives lots of new books for my reading list.

  89. Jorie

    Ms. Kendig,

First of all, I hope that this posts correctly as part of your website is shifted off screen to the left? I am not sure as to why? Anyhoot, I had to agree with one commenter that I always liked Patrick Henry or even John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, or George Washington — the men who founded our nation have such a rich history! However, to be truthful, my favourite these days are the men and women who serve overseas and by which I can send support through my volunteer efforts with Soldiers’ Angels. The Chaplains I enjoy helping the most, as their on the front attempting to re-strengthen the courage, strength, and faith that all soldiers need whilst serving. Therefore, I would say: Active-Duty Chaplains who are currently deployed! πŸ™‚ I tip my hat to them each time I send them a bit of joy from back home! Again, I hope this can be seen on your end!

  90. Melissa Oldaker

My favorite patriot is my husband, a retired US Marine. I absolutely love your books and already had liked your fb page.

My favorite patriot is my cousin Chad. He is a Navy Seal and has been to Afghanistan and Iraq several times. He is a husband and a father…I really admire him!!

My brother! He was the CO at NAS Whiting Field and now he’s in the middle east serving our country. Paul’s a helicopter pilot for the Navy….and he leaves 5 kids/step-kids all under the age of 16 back here at home.

Neither of the Rafflecopter links seem to be working :(. Oh, well. I just finished Dead Reckoning (the first book of yours that I’ve ever read), and I wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed it (and that I had a hard time putting it down!).

Ah, technical glitches! The dirge of the Internet age…especially to those of us who are older than the Internet!

This blog post was so thoughtful and informative. It launched me and my daughters into a great discussion of favorite universal themes (I’m a Phantom and Beauty and the Beast lady). Solomon said nothing is new under the sun, and it’s true of writing. But God made the storytellers, and each of us is unique. Embrace your own version of your story as what God has put on YOUR heart!

Rafflecopter is having fun tonight. Leaving a comment instead. πŸ™‚ This series looks wonderful, Ronie. And thanks for introducing me to a new author. Anne Elisabeth Stengl’s books look interesting, and I love her writing advice. πŸ™‚

Oh and I already like your facebook page. πŸ™‚

Too hard to choose a favorite patriot! From the Founding Fathers to my current local state representative and state senator, they are each and every one so very important!
