THE CHRISTIAN FICTION SCAVENGER HUNT STOP #23

INTRO:  Welcome to the 2013 Summer Scavenger Hunt! This hunt (which begins at noon Mountain Daylight Time and not before) has 32 stops and runs 5/17-5/19/13. You can make the loop, reading unique content from 31 different authors, and if you complete the loop, and fill out the Rafflecopter form at Stop #32, you’ll be in the running for an iPad Mini (loaded with all our books), or one of two runner-up prizes—all 31 of our new releases in paperback. In addition, some authors are offering additional prizes, so be sure to read each post thoroughly to be in the running for all that are available. The contest is open internationally.

 

If you’ve JUST discovered the hunt, I recommend you begin at the beginning, Stop #1, found at LisaBergren.com. But you can also begin here, and keep on rolling. Just be aware that you have to have the COMPLETED phrase in order, which you construct gathering the clue at each stop, within 24 hours of email notification from Lisa Bergren that you won. Turning a Standard Storyline On Its Head

“I would write a book, but every time I think I’ve got a good idea, I find out that someone else has already done it!”
 
I cannot tell you how many times I have heard this same sad plaint from wannabe novelists. But I’m not as sympathetic as I might be. Because you know what? Ultimately, it’s just another excuse.
 
There are no new ideas left in the writing world. Seriously, people! It’s all been done before. I recently taught a creative writing class at a local university in which I shocked my audience by explaining that everybody’s favorite Star Wars: A New Hope movie is just a retelling of Cinderella, packaged up with some new frills. It was actually kind of funny to watch the looks on the boys’ faces as I pieced together the connections for them: Cinderella = Luke Skywalker, Stepmother = Uncle Owen, Royal Ball = Flight School, Obiwan Kenobi = Fairy Godmother, Light-saber = glass slipper . . . and so on and so forth.
 
It’s a been-done story. We’ve seen it before. And then we’ve seen it again.
 
But that’s also why we love it so much!

When I sat down to write my newest novel, Dragonwitch, I found myself crippled for the first several months of drafting as I struggled to make it completely original. But when that didn’t work, I decided to take a step back and compile a handful of “been-done” storylines. In this case, storylines that I honestly thought were tired, used, and no longer interesting. These included:

  1. The Chosen One
  2. The arranged marriage
  3. The magic sword (and I even went ahead and stuck mine in a stone, à la King Arthur)
  4. The mysterious old man with secret knowledge
  5. And the . . .

 
Well, actually, I don’t want to tell you about that last one! While it’s a very used theme that we’ve seen a dozen times before in fantasy fiction, it’s also still a surprise, and I’d hate to spoil it! (You’ll know it as soon as you read it though. Trust me.)
 
So I looked at my list of been-done tropes. And I thought to myself, “How could I do these differently?”
 
I didn’t try to come up with “original” storylines. What I did was bring my own perspective on old storylines. And suddenly I found my creativity opening up. After all, we love those old storylines because they truly are fun! They speak to us, to our individual understanding of universal themes. And there is always a new spin to be spun, a new angle to be tried.
 
Ultimately, there aren’t any new stories. But there are always new storytellers. Every writer has personal experiences, tastes, ideas which she/he brings into play. And those new ideas are what give new life to even the most tired storylines.
 
The more of yourself you pour into your work, the more life it will take on. And that’s when something exciting and–if I dare say it–something “original” begins to happen.

    My family has a Marine in it… a Marine Sgt. We got to write him letters for two tours. We were more blessed by the experience than he was, and he thanked us! We needed to thank him! He remains “our Marine.” 🙂

    I treasure the photos and letters that my grandfather and his two brothers sent home while they were overseas during WW2. My boys never met any of them, but I’m glad to have a piece of their history to share with my kids!

    My kid brother is my favorite patriot 🙂 He is now a veteran, has a full-time federal job, and is pursuing a degree in criminal justice.     My great-grandfather was a veteran. He passed away five years ago, and I miss him a lot. As a kid, I would go into his backyard where he had a HUGE garden. Some of my favorite memories with him were picking strawberries in the garden, and then bringing them in to eat with sugar!

    It’s difficult for me to pick only one patriot who stands above others in my eyes, but I believe George Washington is high on my list. The way he stayed out with the troops in the cold, the snow, the long dreary days of battle fighting for the freedom of our country from England…I wonder if we still have leaders who would be willing to stand with their military and fight in the trenches, rather than staying behind where it’s safe.

    My favorite patriot(s) would be my dad who served in the Air Force, my husband who served in the Marine Corp, my nephews currently serving in Army, Marine Corp and Air Force. We come from a long line of family members who served or are serving our country. Thankful for the sacrifice that they have made and are making for our country.

    My husband was in the Navy for 17 years, my father was in the Coast Guard, my brother was in the Navy, and two of my nephews are in the Army. So I say all of them! (there are many more in my family as well.)

    My favorite patriot has been General Robinson Risner. During the Viet Nam war he was a POW (at that time a Lt. Colonol) and he was instrumental in creating a way to communicate with other POW by sound (like a Morse Code). He led many to Christ. I wore his POW bracelet all through the war. When I found out he made it home I cried like a baby. I was then able to contact him and we shared some special notes back and forth.

    My favorite Patriot is my Grandfather! He is a veteran raised by a veteran and cares for his disable son after a wreck. Even while dealing with ptsd from his war days he still volunteers his time, energy and money into veterans coming home from war and done wrong by fighting for them and giving them a welcoming home.

    I’d say I have two favorite patriots! My all time favorite historical character is George Washington so he would be my first pick and my second is my Pap who fought in WWII. He was a great man who I admire a lot. He passed away a couple years ago but I’ll never forget him! My other Pap was also in WWII but he passed away before I was born so I’ll have to wait until heaven to know him!

    It is hard for me to choose between my Dad and my son for this question. My Dad was in WWII on Saipan. Well, he was there after the fighting, they had to go on shore and see all the dead men that hadn’t been picked up yet. He was a baker on his ship. My Son is in the Air National Guard, for 15 yrs. so far, and has gotten to see the world. He got to walk the streets that Jesus walked on. He got to fly in a Blackhawk, he had to eat fish and cheese out of a tube, everything was in a little tube, he’s seen and done so much.

    My grandfathers on both sides of the family served in WWII. Only one still lives. My father-in-law served in the Korean Conflict as a Crypto officer.     Since I am a Marine wife (Ret) and have 2 Navy sons, one named for his godfather who was a medic in Viet Nam and killed when he was 6 wks old and was also awarded a Silver Star. Guess that’s a start without going into all of the cousins and uncles and my father who served.

    My favorite patriot would have to be my dad. He joined the Army Air Corps at a young age and was a bombardier in WWII. I have a newspaper write-up, where he was called a hero and it tells about the efforts he made. He never talked about the war to me. He would not have thought it was a suitable topic of conversation for him to have with me. Ever the military man, he was a Lt. Col, when he died in 1984, and was awarded the rank of Colonel after his death.

One uncle was killed in Korean War at the age of seventeen. One cousin killed in Vietnam War . I have a close friend that her son was killed from the Iraq War and then nine months later, she lost her husband to cancer. I don’t believe the military gets the honor that’s due.     Favorite Veteran? My dad – U.S. Air Force. Favorite Patriot? So many choices, but a short list would have to include Betsy Ross – for the U.S. Flag; Dolly Madison – for the heroic rescue of the painting of George Washington and Barbara Bush – for being such a loving, elegant First Lady who did not try tp do her husbands job nor did she push herself forward into the “limelight”.

    It would be impossible to pick just one patriot and call that person my favorite. There are so many. I appreciate all those who serve or have served in the military. We have family members that served in Army, Navy, and Air Force. In fact my husband and I met while we were both serving in the Air Force.

    My favorite veteran would have to be my Dad. He joined the Army, then was in the Army Air Corps and finally retired out of the U.S. Air Force in 1964 after being on active duty for 22 years. He was flying B-52’s when he retired. He’s going strong, healthy and happy at 90 and just celebrated 64 years of wedded bliss to my mom (89). She is also my favorite veteran as she served also as a family member, moving all around the country, and even overseas while raising 2 kids.

    My favorite patriot is my grandson who is currently serving in the Army as a Blackhawk crew chief in a Medic Unit. He has served both in Iraq and Afghanistan and is presently state-side. Thank you for being part of the Scavenger Hunt. It is fun and informative and gives lots of new books for my reading list.

    First of all, I hope that this posts correctly as part of your website is shifted off screen to the left? I am not sure as to why? Anyhoot, I had to agree with one commenter that I always liked Patrick Henry or even John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, or George Washington — the men who founded our nation have such a rich history! However, to be truthful, my favourite these days are the men and women who serve overseas and by which I can send support through my volunteer efforts with Soldiers’ Angels. The Chaplains I enjoy helping the most, as their on the front attempting to re-strengthen the courage, strength, and faith that all soldiers need whilst serving. Therefore, I would say: Active-Duty Chaplains who are currently deployed! 🙂 I tip my hat to them each time I send them a bit of joy from back home! Again, I hope this can be seen on your end!

    My favorite patriot is my cousin Chad. He is a Navy Seal and has been to Afghanistan and Iraq several times. He is a husband and a father…I really admire him!!

    My brother! He was the CO at NAS Whiting Field and now he’s in the middle east serving our country. Paul’s a helicopter pilot for the Navy….and he leaves 5 kids/step-kids all under the age of 16 back here at home.

    Ah, technical glitches! The dirge of the Internet age…especially to those of us who are older than the Internet!

    This blog post was so thoughtful and informative. It launched me and my daughters into a great discussion of favorite universal themes (I’m a Phantom and Beauty and the Beast lady). Solomon said nothing is new under the sun, and it’s true of writing. But God made the storytellers, and each of us is unique. Embrace your own version of your story as what God has put on YOUR heart!
