INTRODUCING:

James headshot 8 '13Please welcome the inimitable James L. Rubart! There are a lot of authors out there, but there are few like my guest for this scavenger hunt – James L. Rubart (aka “Rudini”) is a champion and encourager.

Jim is truly one of the best people I know, and a few years ago, my husband and I were honored to spend a weekend with Jim and his wife. He’s a talented author, voice actor, speaker, teacher (he does it all!!). I am so excited to host him and feature his newest masterpiece, The Five Times I Met Myself.

REAL-LIFE EXPERIENCES:

Do you ever wonder if novelist’s insert real-life experiences into their novels?

The short answer? All the time.

For the long answer I thought I’d give a few examples from my most recent novel, The Five Times I Met Myself. (Don’t worry, no spoilers.)

  • reducedPCTJimRshot

    Jim on the PCT

Part of the novel is telling how my main character and his wife meet and fall for each other. It’s almost exactly the story of how my wife and I met.

  • Two summers back I went a little crazy and jumped out of an airplane at 13,000 feet. (Yes, I had a parachute on.) One of my scenes is set at the airfield I jumped at.

  • In high school I had a girlfriend who made me a picture collage and when I finally took it apart I found a incredibly sweet note on the hidden on the back, under the covering paper. I thought it so cool I put the idea into my novel.

  • My oldest son and I hiked part of the Pacific Crest Trail a couple years ago and met some, shall we say, colorful characters. So of course there’s a scene on the PCT with a cameo by one of those characters.

  • One of my great friends is an executive in the coffee industry and he mentioned a new company he was thinking of starting called Black Fedora. I thought was a wonderful name for a coffee company so I asked him if I could use it for the book and he agreed. So that’s where my hero (Brock) works.

  • My family and I met a guy at a hotel we were staying at named Lenny Buck. I loved the name so I put Lenny in a scene where everything I describe about him is real.

There’s at least ten other examples, but that gives you a flavor of how I insert real life into my books.

And by the way, if you ever see my wearing my, “Be Careful, Or I’ll Put You In My Novel” sweatshirt, you’ll know it’s absolutely true.

ABOUT JIM RUBART’S BOOK:

26093614What if you met your twenty-three year old self in a dream? What would you say?

Brock Matthews’ once promising life is unraveling. His coffee company. His marriage.

So when he discovers his vivid dreams—where he encounters his younger self—might let him change his past mistakes, he jumps at the chance. The results are astonishing, but also disturbing.

Because getting what Brock wants most in the world will force him to give up the one thing he doesn’t know how to let go of . . . and his greatest fear is it’s already too late.

I thought I was already signed up for your newsletters but could be wrong. When I attempted to do so, I first got no response. Then I got a message that I had attempted too many times. I don’t have a clue what is happening.
