Writing A Fallen Hero

One of the hardest things I’ve ever written is a hero who starts out honorable, but after some bad choices, finds himself in a very dark place. In SOUL RAGING, the conclusion to the Book of the Wars series, Leif Metcalfe is desperate for answers and feels betrayed by those he trusted. When it seems the enemy is more trustworthy than those he calls “friends,” what choice is he left with but to join the enemy?

The hardest thing about writing Leif’s journey was knowing where he needed to go, how turbulent and messy the days/scenes ahead would be, before he found freedom and peace. I knew it wouldn’t be a “fun” ride, but I knew he was a necessary ride for a character who found himself embroiled in chaos. This made me really consider whether or not I wanted to write such an emotionally heavy story, but ultimately, I felt convicted about wanting to write an ‘easy’ arc and/or story.

We all make mistakes, some bigger than others, some smaller—and so does Leif. But those mistakes are as much a part of our journeys as are the correct choices. Rapid-Fire Fiction readers know that I don’t shy away from hard, raw stories and/or characters, and I write those stories because of the audience I’m writing to—the broken, the ones who’ve made mistakes, yet who also have a deep-seated desired to do right … just like me. It’s in those stories that I find the greatest victory and joy, both in writing and reading!

ABOUT SOUL RAGING
