VVolt is gone. Our hearts are shattered. Mid-morning yesterday—after he’d eaten breakfast and taken his medications—I noticed he wasn’t doing well. He seemed very mopey, then borderline lethargic, refusing food and water. So, we took him to the ER … and late last night he went into distributive shock, likely from the cancer. The Red Bank Veterinary Staff, especially Dr. Levitt, was extremely respectful and caring—they draped a flag blanket over him as Brian and I watched him leave our sides to seize the Rainbow Bridge. I’m over here minding my own business, having dinner with my husband–at a restaurant for the first time in six months!!–and my phone starts blowing up … BRAND OF LIGHT won the 2020 ACFW Carol Award – Speculative!! This is the first-ever win with this award, which is special to me for so many reasons, including that I grew up in ACFW as an author, I coordinated the Carols a while back, and–mostly–because BRAND is truly the story of my heart and one I never gave up on. WOWOWOW!!!!

For those who have missed my posts on Facebook or Instagram, two weeks ago it was determined that my retired military working dog, VVolt N629, was once again battling cancer. The diagnosis came Saturday morning and Monday afternoon, he received his first round of chemotherapy. On Monday the 22nd, he will begin an aggressive radiation treatment against the hystiocytic sarcoma that spread from his leg (diagnosed/treated last October – November) to his abdomen and enlarged his lymph nodes. Mercifully, VVolt is covered by the United States War Dogs Association under their medical and Rx program, so we have had no financial cost, save the cost of gas to drive to the clinic about 45 minutes away.
